If you don’t know what the Shaka is, Fitted Hawaii explains to us the possible origin of this Shaka sign, which is believed to be the new peace sign. Well, the Honolulu Star Bulletin actually ran an article in 2002 about the origin of the infamous sign with which they say has to do with a legend of a man named Hamana Kalili of Laie.
He is believed to have a position at the Kahuku Sugar Mill, and there he has lost three of his fingers and from then on, “he had to leave the sugar mill and eventually picked a job up as a security guard on the “sugar train” which traveled between Sunset Beach and Ka’a’awa.”
As a security guard, he has to keep children off the train as they would try to jump the train to ride from town to town. The guards then started signaling each other, and since he only has two fingers left, the perfect signal to do it is what we now call the “Shaka” sign.
Interesting enough, Fitted Hawaii will then be releasing a woven-straw hat, which will feature the Shaka sign in white raised embroidery. It has an orange button, green New Era logo on the side, and dark and light green shades on the under brim and lining in tri-lock pattern. A logo crest is also placed at the back in raised green stitching with white stroke.
