Well, the Honolulu Star Bulletin actually ran an article in 2002 about the origin of the infamous sign with which they say has to do with a legend of a man named Hamana Kalili of Laie.
He is believed to have a position at the Kahuku Sugar Mill, and there he has lost three of his fingers and from then on, “he had to leave the sugar mill and eventually picked a job up as a security guard on the “sugar train”…
